I have allergies. Can I still buy a puppy?2025-06-23T06:44:10+00:00

If allergies are a concern, we highly recommend visiting us at a dog show at the DogsWest grounds so you and your family can meet our dogs in person and see how you react.

Many families with mild allergies have found that their symptoms lessen or even disappear over time with regular exposure to their puppy — and are now happily living with their Miniature Schnauzer.

To find out when and where we’ll be showing next, just send an email to Shannon at hello@howleluyah.com.

Can we come to your home to meet your dogs?2025-06-23T06:43:10+00:00

We don’t open our home to the public for general visits, and that’s a decision we’ve made for a number of important reasons — including the health and safety of our dogs, our family’s privacy and the well-being of young puppies.

However, we’re proud to share regular updates, photos and videos on our Facebook and Instagram pages, as well as on our website, so you can see our dogs and the way we raise our puppies.

If you’d like to meet us in person, you’re warmly invited to visit us at one of our dog shows at DogsWest’s grounds in Southern River. It’s a great way to meet our current show team and chat with us about our program. Simply email hello@howleluyah.com to find out about our upcoming show schedule.

For families on our Puppy Waitlist, we host a Visit the Pups Day at our home once the puppies are old enough. If you’re seriously considering a Howleluyah puppy in the future and would like to be included, please reach out to Shannon at the email above so she can keep you in the loop.

Do you sell breeding or show dogs (on Main Register)?2025-06-23T06:42:44+00:00

As a general policy, we do not sell puppies on the Main Register (with breeding rights). Our puppies are placed primarily as beloved family companions, and are desexed safely — either via vasectomy or ovary-sparing spay — before leaving us.

In rare cases, we may place a puppy on the Main Register under co-ownership only. This comes with a contract requiring the dog to be shown, titled and fully health tested (all at the co-owner’s expense) before any breeding can occur. Co-owned dogs remain in joint names until they are desexed.

We’ve invested significantly in our imports and breeding program to protect and progress the Miniature Schnauzer in Western Australia — and that mission will always remain our priority.

What sets your puppies apart?2025-06-23T06:42:21+00:00

In-depth pre-puppy education
Our new families receive a comprehensive email education series leading up to puppy pick-up — and it’s one of the most raved-about parts of our service.
We make sure you’re prepared, confident, and fully supported.

Ongoing breeder support
You’re never alone. We’re here to answer your questions even after your puppy goes home.

Comprehensive vet care before leaving
Our puppies are:

  • Vaccinated later at 10 weeks so no annual boosters needed… for life!
  • Desexed using vasectomy or ovary-sparing spay techniques with a reproductive specialist vet
  • Raised without unnecessary vet exposure while vulnerable

Ready for Puppy School
Around a week after going home, your puppy is ready to start school — with foundational socialisation already under their belt thanks to our home, children and older dogs.

How long is your Health Guarantee?2025-02-04T14:47:47+00:00

We have a 2 year health guarantee for congenital issues (serious abnormalities) and a lifetime health guarantee against the diseases listed in the About the Breed page under the Health section. We will refund the cost of the puppy.

Are there conditions on the Health Guarantee?2025-02-04T14:47:37+00:00

Yes, there are certain conditions that need to be met in order for the Health Guarantee to be valid. Think of it as a meeting of the minds for the puppy. We will guarantee the health as long as the new owners are taking care of the puppy’s needs as per our guidance.

Have you ever had a health guarantee called in?2025-02-04T14:47:21+00:00

We are happy to report that to date no health guarantees have been called in.

Not ready to join the Puppy Waitlist but still want to hear about available puppies?2025-06-23T06:40:46+00:00

Absolutely — just make sure you’re signed up for our email newsletter, as that’s where we announce upcoming litters first.

That said, our puppies are usually spoken for before they’re even born, which means we rarely have availability to announce.

Our Puppy Waitlist is designed for families who are truly committed to getting a Howleluyah puppy and who align with our breeding philosophy. Joining the Waitlist requires an application and a fee, which is fully deducted from the final puppy price.

If your heart is set on a Howleluyah Miniature Schnauzer, the best next step is to complete our Puppy Questionnaire — you’ll find it on the Puppies page.

Our families will tell you: the wait is always worth it.

How long is your waitlist?2025-06-23T10:46:59+00:00

This, of course, varies! We don’t however keep a long waitlist and will close a litter’s waitlist when places are full (we advise on our Available Puppies section found under the Puppies page).

Do you mentor new breeders?2025-01-23T09:06:42+00:00

No. Shannon is singularly focussed on her efforts here at Howleluyah.

How old are puppies when they leave Howleluyah for their new families?2025-01-23T09:05:47+00:00

Our puppies leave us just after 10 weeks of age. Puppies either have a vasectomy (males) or an ovary-sparing spay (females) at 10 weeks and a couple of days after this procedure is Puppy Pickup Day. There are no exceptions to this.

Can I buy two puppies from the same litter?2025-01-23T09:04:57+00:00

We don’t sell sibling puppies from the same litter. We are all about Howleluyah puppies being as successful as they can be. Whilst it might seem like a noble gesture to buy siblings, it’s more difficult to train two puppies and most people are not prepared for the commitment it will require. This means two dogs without adequate training will devolve into poor manners, and bad habits and be a nuisance to all – we don’t want this for our puppies or their families.

If you’re keen to add two dogs to your household, we do recommend having an age gap of a year or so.

Once you’ve dialed in training with the first puppy and they mature enough to have an “off” switch and good manners, they will help make life easier when you decide to add a second (and help train in good habits).

Should I get a boy or a girl puppy?2025-01-23T09:04:21+00:00

If you’re unsure which will suit you better, we like to say that girls will love you… but boys will be in love with you!

Females tend to rule the roost (it’s a matriarchal society in dogs!). There’s always a hierarchy within a pack that they usually figure out amongst themselves. With their families, however, they’re loving and involved in everything, if you’ll let them be. They love to keep watch over the home.

Males tend to be incredibly affectionate and will do anything for a cuddle at any time of the day. They tend to be more protective when the occasion arises. They shall require training in the area of any marking behavior (which is part of the first year of training any male pup as they mature) but this is easily done if consistency exists in communicating effectively the desired behaviour and then rewarding it.

Females tend to naturally incline their affections to men, and males vice versa. Saying that, I’m always surrounded by my girls dogs at home – wherever I am.
If you already have a girl, then a boy is a great choice. Two boys go great together

What colours do you breed?2025-01-23T09:02:55+00:00

We breed Pepper & Salt (grey body, white beard, and furnishings) and Black & Silver (black body, silver/white beard and furnishings).
We do not breed solid blacks or whites.

Why are your puppies more expensive than others I’ve seen?2025-06-23T12:35:59+00:00

Yes, it’s true — one can usually find a cheaper puppy. But cheaper doesn’t mean better.

How a puppy is bred and raised makes all the difference. It can be the dividing line between a dog with ongoing health, structural or temperament issues… and the right puppy who fits beautifully into your life for the next 12–15 years.

At Howleluyah, we don’t cut corners.

We include a lot of extras – including safe early desexing. Because we keep our puppies until they’re older, there is also no need for further vaccinations throughout the entirety of the puppy’s life (no matter what your business-running vet might tell you).

While some breeders may offer a lower price up front, most families still end up spending $800–$1,000 more on top of that price to cover desexing and additional vaccination.

We invest in every stage of your puppy’s early development — from breeding parents with excellent health and sound temperaments, to our structured socialisation, enrichment and grooming protocols and our commitment to ethical, natural rearing.

Thinking about another breeder? Here are the questions to ask:2025-06-23T06:46:12+00:00
  • Can I see the pedigree of both parent dogs?
  • Can the breeder trace health history through the generations?
  • Do both parents have current eye certificates?
  • Can I see DNA results for inherited diseases in the breed?
  • Why were those two dogs paired together?
  • Are there Champions in the pedigree? (It’s not the only indicator of quality, but still worth noting.)
  • How has the puppy been prepared for lifelong grooming needs?
  • Does the breeder work during the week?
  • Do they offer a health guarantee?
  • Will they take the dog back at any age if needed?
